PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND ROADS - SUPPORT NEW NUMBER PLATES

Issued by: Gauteng Legislature

18 March 1997

The Gauteng Legislature Standing Committee on Public Transport and Roads today (18 March 1997) restated its support for the new number plates in use in the province.

"An investigation was necessitated by the Democratic Party's complaint regarding the visibility of the new number plates", said Committee Chairperson, Mr Khabisi Mosunkutu.

"The Standing Committee satisfied itself again that the number plates:

1. have gone through thorough testing by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS); 2. are within all legal specifications for South African number plates; and 3. are supported by all the Traffic Departments within Gauteng.

"The innovation of the new GP number plates is being followed by many other provinces who are also moving away from the traditional yellow and black colours. The complaint has proven to be unfounded. We hope that this will help lay this issue to rest. The Standing Committee reaffirms its support for law enforcement against illegal number plates".
