MEDIA ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA BY H E MR KOFI ANNAN, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS, AND MRS ANNAN.

Wednesday: 19 March 1997
13:40 H E Mr Kofi Annan and Mrs Annan arrive at the Cape Town International Airport to be met by Mr A Pahad, Deputy Minister; Mr LH Evans, Director General; Mr A Minty, Deputy Director General and other dignitories from South Africa. On the UN office the following dignitories will meet H E Mr Kofi Annan; Mr J D Whaley, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative, Mr Y Shamapande, Director: UN Information Office and other officials.

Thursday: 20 March 1997
11:00 President Nelson Mandela meet with Mr Kofi Annan at Genadendal. All media with valid press cards are welcome and should meet Robert Raborifi at the entrance to Genadendal not later than 10:15 (Photo opportunity). NB No camera flashes or TV lights will be allowed.
12:05 H E Mr Kofi Annan and entourage proceed to Parliament and be met by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Frene Ginwala at the entrance to Parliament. All media arrangements inside Parliament should be communicated with Zamindlela Zama / Elmien Riley at (021) 403 3902.
14:30 H E Mr Kofi Annan will address a press conference which will be chaired by Mr A Pahad, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Presentation of the new Constitution of the Republic of South Africa will be made by Mr Pahad to Mr Annan.
All media with valid press cards are welcome and should be in the foyer of The Rain Forest Room (Large Auditorium) 120 Plein Street not later 14:00
15:30 H E Mr Kofi Annan arrive at the offices of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, 106 Adderley Street and will be met by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr Alex Boraine and other members of the TRC. 09:30 H E Mr Kofi Annan depart from Ysterplaat Air Force Base for Robben Island accompanied by Mr E Daniels, former teacher and inhabitant of B cell section which he shared together with President Mandela. Media arrangements will be confirmed later.
