Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government
The Gauteng Government condemns the killing and injury of innocent people before, during and after the IFP march in Johannesburg yesterday.
The Premier calls on the Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, without surrendering the option of appointing a Commission of enquiry into the incident. Such wanton violence will not be tolerated.
This is the third march around the same issue with an average of four people being killed in each march.
THe arrest of the marchers for possession of arms is a further indication that some of the marchers had anything but peaceful intentions when they set out to march to the library Gardens.
Despite the undertaking by the IFP leaders that the march will be peaceful, the opposite happened and we hold the IFP leadership morally accountable for the unnecessary loss of life, disruption in the city centre and other affected areas and the effects these has on the economy.
