MUFAMADI STATEMENT ON DEATH OF COMMISSIONER RADU

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

MARCH 12, 1997, PRETORIA.

It was with great shock to learn about the untimely death of Assistant Commissioner Leonard Radu - Head of the Internal Security - in the South African Police Service (SAPS) early this morning in a car collision.

Commissioner Rad, 39, was on his way to Johannesburg International Airport to board a flight to Durban when the fatal accident occurred. He was a young, energetic and dedicated member of the SAPS, who through his unflinching commitment to his work earned respect amongst his colleagues. His untimely death is a great loss to his family ad the police service.

In 1994, he was part of a core team that played a leading role in facilitating the amalgamation of protection service units of former police agencies into a unified national protection service. He selflessly steered the transformation and restructuring of the Internal Security component of the SAPS from being a politically oriented arm of the state to focus on crime intelligence.

I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to his family on behalf of the Ministry for Safety and Security and the entire leadership of the South African Police Service.
