PROF MOKHUANE ELECTED TO COMMITTEE

Professor Esther M Q Mokhuane has been elected as one of five new members of the prestigious Committee on the Rights of the Child, an international body of experts monitoring the implementation, by various countries, of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Twenty-eight candidates from the 187 states which are party to the Convention, stood for election. Professor Mokhuane's term of office runs for a period of four years. She will serve in her personal capacity.

Professor Mokhuane is Head of the Department of Clinical and Applied Psychology at MEDUNSA and has been involved in children's issues for many years.

South Africa ratified the Convention on 16 June 1995. All members of the United Nations, barring six countries, are party to the Convention, making it the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world.
