The International Olympic Committee decision is an outstanding achievement for South Africa as well as for the whole of Africa. It is a validation of our capabilities and an expression of confidence in Africa as a continent with a bright future. The prospect of an Olympic Games in Cape Town present South Africa with yet another challenge to play an active role in the African Rennaissance. A successful Olympic Games in Cape Town would be a wonderful key step in that process. The South African Government has unequivocally guaranteed Cape Town's Bid and will be assisting it in the run-up to the announcement of the 2004 host city in September 1997.
