The Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature, Mr Trevor Fowler, says the High Commissioner of India, His Excellency Mr G. Ghandi, will address the Sitting of the House today in support of an important commemorative motion, and "in recognition of the long-standing relationship between the people of India and South Africa, in their heroic pursuit for democracy, justice and peace".
The Premier will propose a motion commending the contribution of organisations and individuals and in particular Dr A B Xuma (African National Congress, Dr Y M Dadoo (Natal Indian Congress), and DR G M Naiker (Transvaal Indian Congress). On 9 March 1947, the three leaders signed the "Joint Declaration of Co-operation" for the "attainment of basic human rights and full citizenship for all sections of the South African people".
The new Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) representing the Pan Africanist Congress, (PAC), Mr Bonga Majola, is expected to be sworn in at the beginning of the Sitting today (6 March 1997).
The 7 political parties will also debate the Premier's Opening Address of 21 February 1997.
The Sitting takes place at the Legislature Building (cnr Loveday and President streets) in the Johannesburg CBD, and will begin at 14H15. Seating is available for journalists in the Media Gallery on the second floor.
