Issued by: Ministry of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology
In terms of a decision by Cabinet, the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology established a national museum on Robben Island with effect from 1st January 1997.
Advertisements inviting the general public to nominate persons for appointment to the Robben Island Museum Council have appeared in the South African press.
The development of Robben Island is the first formal heritage project of the new South African democracy. This, along with the emotionally-charged symbolism of Robben Island, makes the nomination process for the Council an important historic event.
The nomination process will be an opportunity for the public to play a role in determining the future of Robben Island, since the nominated Council will not only be responsible for governing the 574ha cultural precinct of Robben Island as an associated institution of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, but will also be responsible for setting policy and planning the long-term development of Robben Island in line with the provisions of the Cultural Institutions Act.
The public nomination process is a reflection of the government's commitment to democratising the future of the Robben Island.
Nominees should have knowledge and/or experience in areas of historical and cultural conservation, tourism, education and scientific research, as well as a willingness to render community service and expertise to the Robben Island Museum.
Forward nominations to the Director-General of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology by the 20th March 1997.
