REMUNERATION OF COMMISSIONERS

Issued by: Office of the President

3 March 1997

Dr M G Buthelezi Minister of Home Affairs 120 Plein Street CAPE TOWN 8000

Dear Minister

ELECTORAL COMMISSION: REMUNERATION OF COMMISSIONERS

Thank you for your letter addressed to the President dated 6 December 1996.

After a preliminary discussion with Judge Steyn, this Office had ascertained that it was possible to expedite the process of securing a recommendation from the Commission on the Remuneration of Representatives (the Steyn Commission) in regard to the remuneration of the members of the Electoral Commission.

As the President was in any event required to consult with the Commission before making a determination the Office duly requested Judge Steyn to furnish the President with a recommendation on an expedited basis. This they have now done. The President has indicated that he agrees with the recommendations of the Commission on Remuneration of Representatives with the exception that part-time electoral commissioners should not be paid a fixed salary monthly, but should be remunerated R761 for days on which they work for the Commission.

We would now request that your Department prepare the necessary Presidential Minute determining the remuneration of the Commissioners of the Electoral Commission for formal submission to the President.

Yours Sincerely

G J Gerwel Director-General
