MEETING BETWEEN THE NORTH WEST GOVERNMENT AND THE SOUTH AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC TEACHERS' UNION 19 FEBRUARY 1997
A meeting took place between the North West Government led by the Premier and the South African Democratic Teacher's Union (SADTU) led by its President Mr Willy Madisha The meeting considered a range of issues that affect the efficient delivery of education in the North West Province, more specifically, the following issues were addressed:
Briefing on the Education Task Team Report established last year by the Executive Council to look at internal problems in the Department;
Our cordial discussions on the above issues reflected a commitment to solving problems speedily in the interest of learners and all stakeholders in Education. It became apparent that certain problems require urgent steps to avoid and minimise the risks in the learning environment. In this regard we have tasked the Department of Education to seek immediate solutions to identified problems, in particular the supply of stationery to affected schools estimated at 200.
The meeting urged SADTU and the Department of Education to communicate on an on-going basis with a view to overcoming obstacles speedily in the education delivery.
It was agreed that mechanisms should be set up between the Department and SADTU to monitor progress on the delivery of stationery and other issues. The meeting considered in depth tax problems relating to calculation of taxation from one computer system to another. The North West Government commits itself to communicating more adequately on the matter and all affected persons will be addressed on the issue.
We therefore call on all stakeholders to assist in our efforts to create a stable environment in the Education fraternity. Let us redouble our efforts to ensure that we continue to lead in the matric results as happened last year.
The meeting also agreed that a follow-up meeting be arranged to discuss the Premier's Task Team Report in detail.
