1. TOURIST STATISTICS FOR THE PERIOD JANUARY TO SEPTEMBER 1996
- The Central Statistics Centre has not yet released the official travel data for the period October to December 1996.
- The following statistics are for the period January to September 1996, and are compared to the same period in 1995.

NOTE: These are approximate expenditure estimates only, as respondents were either unwilling or unable to give conclusive information on their expenditure.
2. STANDARDS OF SOUTH AFRICAN HOTELS ARE CLASSIFIED AS "GOOD" BY VISITORS.
- Visitors are requested to rate the facilities they have made use of according to a three-point scale, "good", "fair" or "below average". Although not all visitors take the trouble to rate facilities, South African hotels are classified as "good" by visitors.
- Some complaints received during the year referred to deceptive advertising, lacking hospitality and unacceptable standards and services.
