UPDATED MEDIA PROGRAMME & ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE STATE VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY HM KING CARL XVI GUSTAF AND QUEEN SILVIA OF SWEDEN, FROM 18 - 20 FEBRUARY 1997 (CAPE TOWN AND GAUTENG)

WEDNESDAY, 19 FEBRUARY 1997

08:40 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia arrive at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Photo opportunity only)

To be met by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chairperson of the TRC, and Dr Alex Borraine, Deputy Chairperson of the TRC.

Address: 7th Floor 106 Adderley Street

Media: Due to limited space in the foyer of the building, pool arrangements will be followed for the arrival. Pool members to meet Lydia Young at the entrance to 106 Adderley Street not later than 08:30.

Media: A short photo opportunity will be allowed at the beginning of the proceedings. Due to limited space in the Board Room, pool arrangements will be followed. The media will be briefed separately on the activities of the TRC.

The same media pool will do both photo opportunities at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The media boat for Robben Island will leave at 09:00. Please note that media representatives who wish to cover Their Majesties' visit to Robben island will not be able to go to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the University of Cape Town and vice versa.

10:20 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia arrive on Robben Island by helicopter, accompanied by Mr Ahmed Kathrada, and proceed to the prison (B-section) (Photo opportunity only)

To be met by Prof Andre Odendaal, Acting Administrator of the Robben Island Museum.

10:30 Their Majesties are briefed by Mr Kathrada in the courtyard of the B-section.

Media: Unlimited fixed position. Valid press cards required. After the briefing the media who are not part of the pool will be escorted back to the bus to be ready for departure to the lime quarry before Their Majesties.

11:10 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia leave from the helipad for the University of Cape Town.

Media: Transport and other arrangements for Robben Island.

The boat will leave from the Robben Island departure point opposite Quay Four at 09:00. Media are advised to report at the boat not later than 08:45. Valid press cards will be required. On arrival at Murray Bay Harbour the media will go to the prison directly by bus where they will be briefed on the history of the prison. A short tour will follow. After Their Majesties' visit to the prison the media bus will follow the convoy to the lime quarry. Although they will not be able to photograph Their Majesties' arrival at the lime quarry, there will be sufficient time to photograph their visit. On Their Majesties' departure the media will be taken on a shot tour of the island before they leave for Cape Town Harbour.

11:45 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia arrive at the Senate Room accompanied by Dr Ramphele.

Their Majesties are welcomed by Prof Martin West, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and introduced to student representatives from various student organisations (Photo opportunity only)

Media: Members of the media interested in covering the discussions should be at the Senate Room not later than 11:40. Valid press cards will be required. A short photo opportunity will be allowed at the beginning of the proceedings whereafter TV cameras and stills photographers who wish to cover the visit to the Irma Stern museum will have to leave.

- After the introduction, a discussion on the broad role of students in the transformation process will take place.

Media: Members of the media are welcome to attend the discussions. A number of seats will be reserved for the media who will be accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis. Media representatives should report to the Senate Room not later than 11:40. Valid press cards will be required.

14:48 Their Majesties depart on a short tour of Khayelitsha accompanied by Councillor and Mrs Olivier. Mr W Loots, Chief Officer of the Lingethethu-West Administration, will act as guide (+- 20 min).

Media: The Media will leave immediately for Philani Nutrition Centre on Their Majesties' departure.

- the Masiyile High School choir will perform at Their Majesties' arrival

Media: Due to limited space inside the Philani centre, pool arrangements will be followed. Please note that journalists do not form part of the camera pools inside the buildings, only TV cameramen and stills photographers.

At the arrival there will be a fixed media position for all pool members including journalists. Valid press cards and ID documents/passport will be required. Pool media and interested journalists to report at the gate to the Philani Nutrition Centre not later than 14:55. The gates will be closed after that and no late-comers will be accommodated.

- Their Majesties visit the nutrition rehabilitation programme. The will be briefed by Sister Jwambi and nutrition worker Mamphena Nyoka.

Media: Cameras in this pool will have to hurry form the arrival point to pre-position themselves before Their Majesties enter the room. Journalists will be able to position themselves at the windows on the veranda, as soon as Their Majesties have moved into the room, from where they will be able to follow proceedings inside.

- Their Majesties visit the weaving shop. To be briefed by Mr M Gaccini

Media: Cameras in this pool will have to pre-position themselves in the weaving shop while Their Majesties are being briefed on the nutrition rehabilitation programme. The journalists will follow Their Majesties into the weaving shop.

- Their Majesties visit Educare. To be briefed by Ms L Kopile

Media: Pool members will have to pre-position themselves in the Educare centre while Their Majesties are being briefed on the nutrition rehabilitation programme. Unfortunately journalists cannot be accommodated at this venue due to limited space.
