UPDATED MEDIA PROGRAMME & ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE STATE VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY HM KING CARL XVI GUSTAF AND QUEEN SILVIA OF SWEDEN, FROM 18 - 20 FEBRUARY 1997 (CAPE TOWN AND GAUTENG)

TUESDAY, 18 FEBRUARY 1997

11:00 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia arrive at Tuynhuys for a full ceremonial welcome (No photo opportunity of Their Majesties' arrival at Tuynhuys. Photo opportunity of the National Salute which will take place on the Gardens side of Tuynhuys)

To be met by President Mandela and his companion

- National Anthems - 21-gun Salute - Inspection of the Guard of Honour by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf

Media: There will be three unlimited fixed media positions:

- First/second positions : Two platforms facing the podium for stills photographers and TV cameras only. - third position : On the veranda for print media. The media standing on the veranda will face the Guard of Honour and the two media platforms and will be able to see the podium at an angle.

NOTE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN AND FCA MEDIA: Limited space is available on the two platforms. Your are advised to bring step ladders.

A small camera pool will be allowed on the veranda to cover the inspection of the Guard of Honour. The pool should please position themselves in the media area nearest to the veranda (on the left side):

Please note that pool members are under obligation to make material available to all media on request.

Media representatives are requested to use the front entrance to Tuynhuys to gain access to the garden on the Gardens side of Tuynhuys where the ceremonial welcome will take place. Valid press cards and ID documents/ passports will be required and all media representatives and their equipment will be screened. Members of the media are strongly advised to report to the front entrance to Tuynhuys not later than 10:20. unfortunately no late-comers can be accommodated.

Media representatives who are not part of the Swedish media contingent or members of the Press Gallery will have to enter the Parliamentary grounds through 120 Plein Street where they will be screened first. Please allow +- 20 minutes for this.

11:08 Their Majesties, President Mandela and his companion proceed to the President's Office for a private meeting.

The Swedish and South African delegations proceed to the Presidential Board Room for bilateral discussions and the signing of the agreements.

11:13 The Swedish Minister of Internal Development Cooperation and deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Pierre Schori and the South African Acting Minister of foreign Affairs, Mr Steve Tshwete, sign the bilateral agreements in the President Board Room (Photo opportunity and informal media call)

Media: Media representatives covering the ceremonial welcome are requested to stay in their positions until the Guard of Honour has dispersed at the end of the ceremony whereafter they will be escorted to the Presidential Board Room as soon as the delegations are ready for the signing ceremony.

Please note that members of the media who wish to cover Their Majesties' arrival at Parliament, will be allowed to exit through the gate between Tuynhuys and Parliament.

(In case of bad weather the decoration ceremony will take place in the Drawing Room).

12:00 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia take leave of President Mandela and his companion at the front door of Tuynhuys (Official photographers only. No flashlights).

12:05 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia arrive at the entrance to the National Assembly (Photo opportunity only).

To be met by Dr Frene Ginwala, Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Patrick Lekota, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Baleka Kgositsile, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Messrs Bulelani Ngcuka and Frank Mdlalose, Deputy Chairpersons of the National Council of Provinces.

12:07 Their Majesties accompany Dr Ginwala to the Speaker's Chamber on the 1st Floor, National Assembly wing

Media: Media pool of 16 persons is escorted into the National Assembly building by Zamindlela Zama and takes up position outside the side entrance to the Speaker's Boardroom.

Mtutu Masiza meets the rest of the Swedish media contingent outside the National Assembly on the steps at 12:10 from where they will be taken on a guided tour of Parliament. Media to leave their photographic/electronic equipment in the media bus. A finger lunch will be served in the old VIP lounge after the tour.

12:10 Their Majesties have informal discussions with Presiding Officers and Deputies in the Speaker's Boardroom.

Media: The media pool has a photo opportunity at the beginning of the talks whereafter they are escorted to the ground floor passage next to the National Assembly Chamber.

12:35 Dr Ginwala leads Their Majesties to the Old Assembly Wing

Media: Media pool covers Their Majesties walking along the ground floor towards the Old Assembly Wing.

12:45 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia attend a luncheon in their honour in the Old Assembly dining room.

Media: The media pool is served a finger lunch i the old VIP lounge and will only enter the dining room after the main course for the exchange of toasts.

Media pool is escorted to the Public Gallery of the National Assembly Chamber, where they will wait for the arrival of Their Majesties.

14:15 HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia are escorted to the National Assembly Chamber by Dr Ginwala.

Media: Due to limited space inside the banquet hall and the drawing room, strict pool arrangements will apply for both venues. The same pool will cover both venues.

Inside the banquet hall the media will only be permitted to cover the speeches. A distribution box with 6 feeds will be available and consequently no microphones will be allowed on the podium. The electronic media will be required to set up their equipment before the arrival of the guests.

Please note that no flashlights or TV lights will be allowed.
