MUFAMADI STATEMENT ON ST ALBANS HOSTAGE SITUATION

Issued by: Ministry of Safety and Security

The government commends the South African Police Service special task force and the Correctional Services Department for successfully ending the hostage situation at St Albans Prison this morning.

This action is a fine example of the skill and bravery that is demonstrated each day, throughout the country, by members of the South African Police Service.

In the current climate of serious crime and periodic reports of police corruption, let us not forget that the vast majority of our police are honest and dedicated men and women who are providing an invaluable service to the public, and that many have given their lives in selfless service to others.

Whereas the police obviously will seek to avoid the use of force in resolving conflict situations, let no one doubt the resolve of the South African Government and its security services to take appropriate action to protet the lives of innocent people.

The police action at the St Albans prison should make it absolutely clear that the South African government will not tolerate the taking of hostages.
