The executive committees of the Committee of Technikon Principals (CTP) and Committee of University Principals (CUP), today had a meeting with the Minister of Education in Pretoria. This meeting, held at the request of the two bodies, was convened to register the strong concerns of the higher education sector regarding the funding level for Universities and Technikons, according to the provisional figures released by the Department of Education during the month of December 1996.
It was strongly felt that the provisional funding levels, if implemented, would have a serious detrimental effect on the viability of the higher education sector. The CUP/CTP stressed to the Minister the viewpoint that every effort should be made to realise the same funding level as was attained in 1996.
Another conMinister was the adequate funding of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. with the realisation that the majority of higher educationg their financial obligations, the CTP/CUP urged the Minister to substantially increase the level of financial aid.
The Minister responded sympathetically to the concerns expressed and undertook to continue his efforts to secure increased funding for education.
