TAXATION AND FEES TO BE LEVIED ON GAMBLING ACTIVITIES

Issued by: Gauteng Legislature

The Finance and Economic Affairs Standing Committee in the Gauteng Legislature will finalise the taxation and fees to be levied on the gambling activities in the Province, at its meeting on Tuesday, 28 January 1997, from 09h00 to 12h30.

The Committee has received more than 20 public submission on the matter, and will also consider proposals from the MEC for Finance and economics with respect to tax levies on casinos, gaming machines and bingo, as well as license application and annual fees.

Commenting about the meeting, Committee Chairperson Mr Andrew Feinstein said: "The key issue facing the legislators is to balance the needs for revenue, massive tourism investment, employment creation and empowerment, while ensuring that licenses receive an adequate return.

The question of whether the demographics of Gauteng require tax levies slightly different from other Provinces will also come under discussion.

With respect to licence fees the Committee must decide whether to go the route of a low up-front fee and high annual fees or vice versa.

All these matters need to be resolved in a manner that takes cognisance of the needs of the Province and country as whole, and not to meet the narrow needs of only one of the myriad of interest in the gambling sector, and outside of it," added Mr Feinstein.
