The Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Tarja Kaarina Halonen, will be paying an official visit to South Africa from 22 to 26 January 1997. Ms Halonen has been invited to visit South Africa by Mr Alfred Nzo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The visit will serve to further strengthen the sound relations which exist between Finland and South Africa and to build upon the Finnish support which was rendered in the struggle for democracy. As a member of the European Union, Finnish support is also of importance to South Africa.
Minister Halonen will have discussions on bilateral matters as well as regional and international issues with Minister Nzo at the Diplomatic Guest House, Matroosberg Road, Waterkloof Heights on 22 January 1997. The media are invited to a media opportunity at 12h15.
Minister Halonen will also hold talks with Mr D Omar, the Minister of Justice and Dr M G Buthelezi, the Minister of Home AReconciliation Committee.
Ms Halonen will visit Gauteng and the Western Cape during her stay.
