OMAR MET WITH 56 ALUMNI FROM PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

Minister A M Omar, Minister of Justice, today met with 56 alumni from the Princeton University, USA who are on a visit to South Africa. The group, led by Professor Jeffrey Herbst from that University were informed about crime in general, as well as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by the Minister.

Minister Omar referred to the valuable role of visitors in terms of their objective assessment of the situation in South Africa, was well as their feedback to their countries of origin. He also valued contributions and input from them in terms of their past experience. This would serve to foster a better understanding for problems of mutual interest.

Minister Omar in assessing what the Department of Justice and the Government has been doing since 1994, expressed appreciation for what has been accomplished and in particular welcomed efforts within the communities to restore dignity to those communities that were affected by apartheid-South Africa. "All of South Africa is a victim of the past, and a national effort within communities on a country-wide basis was needed to restore the dignity of communities", he added.
