Issued by: Office of Welfare and Population Development Minister

6 January 1996

Welfare and Population Development Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi will visit Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape tomorrow (7 January 1997) to assess emergency services to children and women who are victims of family and gender violence, and express appreciation to organisations who have continued to provide a service to children and women over the festive period.

The Ministry for Welfare and Population Development, together with other ministries co-ordinating the National Crime Prevention Strategy have embarked on a campaign to draw attention to victims of family and gender violence.

Minister Fraser-Moleketi has committed herself to counter all forms of violence against women and children. The Department for Welfare and Population Development has played a leading role in the Victim Empowerment Programme within the NCPS.

Family and gender violence is an abuse of power and is unacceptable. Organs of civil society and Government have a role to play in fighting this monster!
