VISIT OF DR JONAS SAVIMBI OF UNITA TO UMTATA, SOUTH AFRICA ON MONDAY, 6 JANUARY 1997

Following the recent visit of Deputy President Mbeki to Luanda at the end of December 1996, President Mandela invited the President of UNITA, Dr Jonas Savimbi, to travel to South Africa on 6 January 1997 to brief the Government on developments in Angola.

The South African Government has persistently supported the peace process in Angola on an evenhanded basis and lent its full support to United Nations Security Council resolutions Protocol. In its capacity as chair of SADC, South Africa applauds the peaceful resolution of the Angolan conflict and the installation of the Government of Unity and National Reconciliation in that country. These developments will be of benefit not only to Angola but to the SADC region as a whole and will contribute to the expansion of democracy in Southern Africa.
