The Press Conference
The National Development Agency (NDA) Advisory Committee is due to had over its final report to the Office of the Deputy President's Office on Monday 6 January. The Report will be received at the Union Buildings at 12h00 by Deputy Minister in the office of the Deputy President Essop Pahad.
The Press Conference will follow immediately after a short formal meeting with the Deputy Minister and senior officials. The estimated Press Conference time: between 12h15 and 12h40.
The Press Conference will deal with the report and the process leading up to it. It will also set out how the report will be considered and acted on by government - how the Deputy President and Cabinet will deal with the report.
The Report
The 46-page Report covers findings into the state of the NGO sector, the scale of the development problem and funding issues. It will also put forward recommendations about how the resourcefulness of civil society can be better harnessed to tackle South Africa's development problems.
The Report follows about 5 months of deliberation - it received Cabinet approval in July 1996 after being set up by Deputy President Thabo Mbeki.
The Committee
The Advisory Committee, chaired by Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, was made up of ... members which reflected diverse interests and the needs of different constituencies. Key players on the government side was the Department of Public Works and Welfare, although other government departments also made input Minister of Public Works, Jeff Radebe, also played an active role in the committee's deliberations.

The Committee's deliberations
The committee conducted consultations, received submissions and conducted a limited amount of international research.
Submissions were received from, among other, various government departments as well as from organisations such as Kagiso Trust, Independent Development Trust, The S. African NGO Coalition, donors, the Transitional National Development Trust (TNDT).
With the help of donors, the Advisory Committee commissioned policy work from the Centre for Policy Studies and a series of provincial consultations which was conducted by the Independent Media Services of South Africa (IMSSA).
