SYDNEY MUFAMADI ON INCHANGA KILLINGS

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

RELEASE BY THE MINISTER FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY, MR SYDNEY MUFAMADI, DECEMBER 30, 1996, PRETORIA

RE: INCHANGA KILLINGS

I wish to express condolences to all people killed in the Kwazulu-Natal province during the festive season and to condemn senseless killing of six innocent people in Inchanga.

I have noted comments by a member of the Provincial Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, who is alleging that "the police were given a tip-off which they did not heed. Had they done so lives would have been saved."

His allegations are of a serious nature which warrant an investigation. I have therefore asked Advocate Neville Melville, the Head of the Independent Complaints Directorate to contact Mr Gwala with a view to initiate an investigation as a matter of urgency.

I commend the leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress in the province for calling on the community not to allow itself to be provoked. The department of Safety and Security will give them the necessary support as they close ranks against the perpetrators.
