STATEMENT BY THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

Ms Simone Ingerfeld, a researcher employed in the Western and Northern Cape offices of the TRC was killed in a motor vehicle accident just outside Wilderness on Saturday, 21 December. The motor vehicle, in which she was a passenger, was involved in a collision with a motorbike. Ms Ingerfeld and the driver of the motorbike both died at the scene.
Ms Ingerfeld, who was in her late twenties, and had a masters degree in political studies, had been employed in the Research Department of the TRC since March this year. She was also a member of the executive of the current TRC staff association. She had previously worked on the Human Rights Documentation Project at the Mayibuye Centre at the University of the Western Cape as well as at Parliament's Portfolio Committees.
Dr. Wendy Orr, convenor of the Cape Town office of the TRC, extended condolences to heehalf of the TRC and said that Simone's commitment and contribution in matters of the TRC's work as well as her leadership role in staff matters would be greatly missed.
The funeral is scheduled for Friday, but more details would be available later in the week.
