STATEMENT BY SAFETY AND SECURITY MINISTER SYDNEY MUFAMADI PAGAD DEMONSTRATION AT CAPE TOWN AIRPORT ON DEC 16
As said before in our statement issued on Dec 11 1996, police attention is being diverted from dealing with the problem of crime, which Pagad purports to be concerned about.
As indicated, government has already spent over R1 million policing Pagad marches.
As President Nelson Mandela said, not only Pagad diverting police energies away from dealing with the problem of crime, but their actions are inimical to the growth and development of the tourism industry in the Western Cape.
We are particularly concerned because this time Pagad had no permission to gather at the airport, and they acted with total disregard for the rule of law.
The police had no choice but to act in the firm manner they did.
