President Nelson Mandela has learnt with great shock of the passing away of Mrs Nokukhanya Luthuli.
The message was relayed to the president in Nairobi where he is attending the summit of the leaders of the Great Lakes Region.
Her departure, the president says, is a loss, not only to the ANC and other democratic forces, but to the nation as a whole. She will be sorely missed as a consistent champion of the rights of all the people of South Africa.
The president will issue a fuller statement after his return from Nairobi tomorrow.
