PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA, SAINT LUCIA AND THE FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA

South Africa has established diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia and the Federated States of Micronesia.

A joint communique establishing diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level with these two countries was signed by South Africa's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York on 12 December 1996. THe agreements were signed in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.

The Government of South Africa is confident that diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia and the Federated States of Micronesia will contribute significantly in promoting mutual benefits in the spheres of commerce, economy, culture and tourism, as well as allowing for more meaningful co-operation on issues of mutual concern in multilateral fora.

This brings the total number of countries South Africa has diplomatic relations with to 171.
