PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

South Africa has established diplomatic relations with the Solomon Islands.

On 11 December 1996 the Permanent Representatives of South Africa and the Solomon Islands to the United Nations in New York, signed a Joint Communique establishing diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level between the two countries. The agreement was signed in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.

Both the South African Government and Government of the Solomon Islands are confident that this agreement will contribute significantly in promoting mutual benefits in the spheres of commerce, economy, culture and other fields between the two countries.

This brings the total number of countries South Africa has established diplomatic relations with to 169.
