UPDATE ON EBOLA

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

November 27, 1996

The situation in relation to the monitoring of Ebola fever "contacts" in Gauteng is as follows:

New cases:

None. The total number of Ebola cases treated in Gauteng remains two - one imported and one locally contracted.

Rietfontein referrals:

None today. Since the monitoring system began to operate on Saturday November 16, any contact who has a fever and is feeling ill has been sent to Rietfontein Hospital for blood tests and observation. So far, all of these tests have come up negative.

The number of contacts subject to monitoring is dropping steadily as the 21-day incubation period passes. A good proportion o health workers at the Morningside Medi-clinic who had contact with Dr Clement Mambana, the "index" patient who entered South Africa with the infection, are now in the clear.
