Issued by: Office of the President

25 November 1996

Mr Cyril Lahana 70 7th Street Parkmore Sandton 2146

Dear Cyril,

The tragic death of your wife Marilyn has once more demonstrated the dangerous conditions under which members of the nursing profession work.

Marilyn perished in the course of dedicated duty and in an attempt to save someone else's life. Our sorrow is mixed with admiration of her selfless sacrifice.

I must convey, through you, my deepest appreciation for the work done by the team of doctors and nurses that attended her. The country could have been seized with panic, but for the professionalism they displayed and the efficient control of the situation, everyone is at ease and there is confidence that, in tribute to Marilyn, this situation will be overcome speedily.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your two daughters.

I must congratulate you for the fortitude and calmness you showed throughout this tragedy. Millions of our citizens share your grief and you can be certain of their support, and mine.

Signed by: Nelson Mandela
