GAUTENG RATIONALISATION OF HEALTH CARE SERVICES

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT: ON RATIONALISATION & TRANSFORMATION OF HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN GAUTENG: BY THE GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE REGISTERED UNIONS.

On 21 November the Gauteng Health Department and employee organisations met to consult on.

I. The need and reasons to rationalise and restructure the health care facilities in Gauteng.

II. The proposed plan/model to restructure and rationalise the health care facilities in Gauteng.

All stakeholders accepted the need to rationalise hospital services, create equity across hospitals, strengthen primary health care development and to align the Department's expenditure to its budget.

Towards this end, the Gauteng Health Department agreed to afford employee organisations six weeks to study and consider the proposed plan/model to restructure and rationalise the health care facilities in Gauteng. Employee organisations will form tasks teams to investigate alternative options. The parties will then meet again on 7 January 1997 when employee organisations will present the Gauteng Health Department with their suggestions.

We believe we have laid the firm basis for further consultation on the process of structural transformation in the Gauteng Health Department. Together we will weather this difficult transition and keep the Gauteng Health Department a great place to work.
