TRC - NOBODY CAN GIVE THEMSELVES AMNESTY

Issued by: Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Dumisa Ntsebeza, acting chairperson of the Truth Commission and head of the investigative unit, said in a statement on Sunday night.

"We are regarding General Constand Viljoen's utterances on applying for amnesty in the same way as we do the ANC's. Nobody can give themselves amnesty.

"In the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper today, General Viljoen said that he will not, and neither will any of his colleagues, be applying for amnesty for attacks in the 1980s.

"This follows the Truth Commission debate with the ANC who said they had fought a just war and will not apply for amnesty.

"Last Sunday (Nov 10) at a meeting between Truth Commission chairperson, Archbishop Tutu and a delegation from the ANC it was re-emphasised that individuals from the ANC should apply for amnesty if they feel that they have committed a gross human rights violation."

Statement released by Christelle Terreblanche, media liaison officer for Mr Ntsebeza.
