FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BY THE SECRETARY FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY, MR AZHAR CACHALIA.

re: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE (SAPS) AND THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE UNION (SAPU).
Recent reports in the media relating to mud-slinging between the management of the SA Police Service and South African police Union (SAPU) do not augur well for the quality service the public expect from the department of Safety and Security and are impacting negatively on the department.
The allegations and statements made by both parties do not in any way encourage a co-operative working relationship or foster a positive image for the department nor does it contribute to the on-going transformation process. Our obligation is to reduce and prevent the scourge of crime that has been thrust upon us.
In view of the promulgation of the Labour Relations Act, 1996, a few days ago, such allegations and statements by both parties will not advance labour peace in the department.
Both parties need to recognise the vital importance of commitment to labour peace, mutual respect for both parties, amicable resolution of disputes and commitment to building structured relationships in the workplace.
The Minister of Safety and Security, Mr Sydney Mufamadi, has recommended that both parties take urgent and immediate steps to place their relationship on a healthy footing. If needs be, they should consider seeking the services and assistance of a third party such as the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to facilitate their discussions.
