Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government Office of the Premier
DATE: 13 November 1996.
ADD TO: PREMIER REFUSES TO BE PARTY TO NP'S POLITICAL POSTURING
1. The Premier's Office takes not of the concerns raised by the National Party.
2. However, the Premier takes a poor view of political leaders who attempt to politicise theft, in this case the theft of exam papers. This is a matter purely for police investigation and in this respect the Premier congratulates the police for having effected arrests of suspects here in Gauteng and in Natal.
3. "It is unfortunate that certain political leaders further unsettle the minds of our children particularly during this time when they deserve maximum concentration," the Premier said.
4. The Premier fully supports the steps taken by MEC Mary Metcalfe to set up an enquiry into the whole episode.
5. The leaking of exam papers is a heritage from our apartheid past and it is very rich for the NP to now suddenly turn around and claim that it is a result of the ANC's incompetence.
6. HOWEVER IN A TELEPHONE DISCUSSION THIS EVENING THE PREMIER ASSURED THE NP LEADER IN GAUTENG MR ROELF MEYER OF HIS PREPAREDNESS TO MEET WITH HIM AND A MEETING WILL BE ARRANGED.
Issued by Sefako Nyaka, Premier's Press Secretary (011) 355-240-1641.
