PRESS RELEASE BY NORTH WEST PREMIER POPO MOLEFE ON A SPECIAL FUNCTION IN THE PROVINCE TO HONOUR THE S A COUNCIL OF CHURCHES:
The Premier of the North West province, Mr Popo Molefe, today (Friday) announced that his province is to honour the S A Council of Churches by hosting a gala event at the Mmabatho Stadium on 23 November.
Apart from top dignitaries from around the country, the event will also feature Ambassador Andrew Young, a long time friend of the oppressed people of South Africa. Ambassador Young will be the guest speaker.
The event has been organised in recognition of the SACCUs unequalled contribution towards the realisation of the dream of a democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa, said Premier Molefe.
He pointed out that for decades, the SACC mobilised funds throughout the world to assist political trialists, to enlist lawyers to defend them, assisted with payment of bail, cared for the families of those in detention or gaol and paid for the education of anti-apartheid activists children.
Apart from Ambassador Young, other speakers will include Premier Molefe, Patrick Terror Lekota, Mrs Brigalia Bam (general secretary of the SACC) and Mrs Boitumelo Molefe, the First Lady of the province.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is also expected to attend as is Mr Arthur Chaskalson (President of the Constitutional Court), who defended many anti-apartheid activists.
The function, which begins at 10am and ends at 3pm on Saturday, November 23, will feature top stars such as Peoples Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, the NUM Cultural Group, Mageu adult choir, African Youth Choirs, Tshepo Tshola and many others.
In a world full of despair and hatred, the SACC emerged as a source of hope and love. In the long and dark night of apartheid injustice and brutality, the SACC became a source of light and refuge to the disadvantaged,S commented Mr Molefe.
