The Cabinet held its regular fortnightly meeting this morning in Tuynhuys, Cape Town. This was its last meeting to be held in Cape Town this year as the Parliamentary session ends to-morrow. The rest of the meetings of the Cabinet for 1996 will be held in the Union Buildings, Pretoria.
The meeting, in the main, considered reports from the Cabinet Committees for Economic Affairs, for Social and Administrative Affairs and for Security and Intelligence Affairs.
The Cabinet was informed that the Commission of Enquiry into the Recent Violence and Occurrences at the East Driefontein, Leeudoorn and Northern Mines had tabled its Report to the President and approved that the Report be published and tabled in Parliament.
The Cabinet received a report on Agrement South Africa, a body which is responsible for the evaluation and certification of non-standard construction systems and products, and approved the persons proposed by the Minister of Public Works to serve on its Board.
The Cabinet received a report on AEC-Amersham (Pty) Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Corporation that is responsible for the marketing of medical radio-isotope products in the country, and approved that a percentage of its shares to be sold to Amersham International. It has been agreed with Amersham International that a percentage of the shares would also be sold to a suitable black business group as well as to the staff. Amersham International is a market leader in the production of medical radio-isotopes.
The Cabient received a report on Project SABRE (South African Band Re-planning Exercise), a radio frequency allocation plan prepared by the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, and approved the proposed plan.
The Cabinet approved two Bills, namely the Financial Institutions Amendment Bill, 1996 and the Correctional Services Third Amendment Bill, 1996 for submission to Parliament
