NW STATEMENT REGARDING THE MATRICULATION EXAMINATIONS

Issued by: North West Communication Service

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE, MR GULAM MAYET, ON PROVINCIAL PROGRESS REGARDING THE MATRICULATION EXAMINATIONS:

The North West Department of Education wishes to reassure pupils, parents and other stakeholders that the matriculation examinations in the province are progressing exceptionally well.

There have been no examination paper leaks whatsoever in the North West, contrary to perceptions that the matric exams throughout the country have been affected by leakages.

To ensure quality and standards, the examination papers were moderated by the South African Certification Council (SAFCERT), which is recognised for standards throughout the education fraternity. In addition, to ensure quality marking, SAFCERT, will moderate what the department's markers would have completed.

The North West, for the first time, had to set its own matric examination papers. The department set 187 papers for our 60 000 matriculants. Nearly 700 examiners were involved in producing these papers and checking their quality, which was later attested to by SAFCERT.

More than 2000 officials are involved in invigilating and their duty is to assess during the actual sitting whether the papers were up to standard or if there are any discrepancies which need to be brought to the attention of the department.

SECURITY:

Very tight security has been imposed to ensure no leaks take place. These measures have been enriched by our experience last year. In addition, the department is fortunate in having a wealth of experience, both South African and international. We are, therefore, confident that our system is tried and tested.

Last year, no leaks or maladministration were experienced in the North West province.

Our experienced staff at head office, districts and schools are currently managing the process in a sterling manner, being committed to the benefit of our pupils in the North West.
