Issued by: Ministry for Welfare and Population Development
On behalf of the Ministry of Welfare and Population Development, I wish to express my deep regret at the senseless killing on Tuesday, of your son Charles Phillips.
The death of Mr Phillips - a dedicated Cape Flats Distress Association social worker, shot dead in cold blood by a man he was counselling has proved the extent of traumatisation of our society. Mr Phillips's contribution as an active member of the SA National Tuberculosis Association and of the Tygerberg RDP Forum, is unmatched.
In this time of sorrow, we grieve with his family and mourn the great loss of this gallant worker who died at a time he was so much needed by his community and South Africa.
We will be monitoring progress in the police investigation and hope that the perpetrator will be brought to book soon. However, we are also saddened that this will not bring back Mr Phillips's life.
To other social workers we say: "Keep Charles Phillips's spirit living!" To his family, we say: "You're not alone."
