Issued by: Department of Home Affairs
The Department of Home Affairs has invited nominations for a new Immigrants Selection Board and various regional committees to replace the present Board, whose term of service ends on 30 November 1996. The main function of the Board and the various committees is to consider applications for permanent residence by prospective immigrants. The Board also reconsiders applications for permanent residence, which have been turned down by the regional committees.
In the past the Immigrants Selection Board was appointed by the Minister of Home Affairs on the basis of recommendations by the Department. Lately the Board has come under criticism because of the alleged secrecy surrounding the Board members and its activities.
To ensure transparency as well as democratic representation and participation, nominations from interested organisations and individuals are now invited for consideration by the Department. Nominations must be from persons not employed by the state or renumerated by it.
These nominations must be accompanied by appropriate curricula vitae as well as the individual's acceptance of the nomination in writing before 17 September 1996. Appropriate experience in/or knowledge of economics, industry, commerce, law, and the labour market is required, although experience and qualifications are not restricted to these fields only.
To furthermore promote representativity the Department decided to decentralise the Immigrants Selection Board and to establish committees in Gauteng, North, Gauteng South and one in each of the other provinces.
