President Nelson Mandela has appointed a Commission of Enquiry into the recent violence on the mines.

Mr Justice John Myburgh, the Judge President of the Labour Courts, has thus been appointed to head this Commission and to make recommendations within ten working days as from the start of the investigation.

The findings will be presented to President Nelson Mandela for consideration.

The terms of reference for the Commission are: "To urgently in- vestigate the causes of the recent violence and occurrences specifi- cally affecting the following mines of East Driefontein, Northam and Leeudoorn and to make recommendations, within ten working days, as to the immediate steps needed to end the strife and carnage."

The Minister of Labour, Mr Tito Mboweni, urges all parties con- cerned to co-operate with the Commission so that the ongoing mine violence, which has claimed the lives of about 30 mine workers, can be stopped.
