The Minister of Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development, Mr Valli Moosa today met with members of the Provincial Executive Council in Mmabatho to discuss matters relating to Provincial powers.
The Minister assured the MEC's that Provincial powers will not be diminished as the new constitution guarantees that.
He highlighted the need for smooth interaction between government departments at national, provincial and local level, and agreed with the provincial leaders on the need to establish mechanism and linkages to facilitate smooth and cohesive government operation especially where national competencies impact on provincial administration.
He pointed out that the constitution recognises the role of traditional leaders, and appealed for the establishment of the house of traditional leaders in areas where these were none and that his department is proceeding the establishment of a council of traditional leaders which will be used to facilitate consultation with the national government.
Moosa further urged new and evolving political structures especially at local government level to recognise and respect the role and authority of traditional leaders and accept them as partners in the RDP programme.
A process of rationalising payment to traditional leaders from the National government is underway.
