Issued by: Truth and Reconciliation Commission
One of the key elements in the work of the Truth and Reconci- liation Commission is the issue of Reconciliation. The component that has dominated the work of the Truth Commission to date has involved the public hearings of the Human Rights Violation Commit- tee.
Now there is a need to focus on the core issue of Reconcilia- tion, and to engender the widest possible support for the idea of reconciliation.
Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, a committee member of the Human Rights Violation Committee, has asked the Renaissance Business Associates (RBA) to facilitate a Think-Tank/Forum to explore strategies to address the question of Reconciliation.
RBA is an established company that has been involved in working with a range of organisations both in South Africa and abroad. They have volunteered their services to facilitate this process for the Truth Commission, the outcome of which will be presented at a full Commission meeting.
The aim of the meeting is to come up with proposals for an effective way of pursuing the vision of reconciliation. The results of the meeting will not be seen as final, but rather as a first step towards involvement in the process of reconciliation by all sectors of South African society.
The members of the commission who will be attending the Forum on Reconciliation are Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, Dumisa Ntsebeza and Glenda Wildschut. Valerie Morris and Judy Bekker of the RBA will be the facilitators.
This meeting will take place on Friday, September 1996, at the RBA offices in Cape Town.
