OMAR STATEMENT ON GENDER EQUALITY

MEDIA STATEMENT BY MINISTER A M OMAR, MINISTER OF JUSTICE: NOMINATIONS FOR THE COMMISSION ON GENDER EQUALITY

In terms of section 119 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1993 (Act 200 of 1993) a Commission on Gender Equality must be established to promote gender equality and to advise and make recommendations to Parliament or any other legislature with regard to any laws or proposed legislation which affect gender equality and the status of women.

The Commission on Gender Equality Act, 1996 (Act No. 39 of 1996) came into operation on 8. August 1996 by Proclamation in the Government Gazette and provides for the composition, powers, functions and functioning of the Commission on Gender Equality and other matters connected therewith. Mr A M Omar (Minsiter of Justice) invites nominations for the appointment of persons on this Commission by the President.

Members of the Commission will be appointed by the President on advice of a Joint Committee of the Houses of Parliament on a full-time or part-time basis and will hold office for a fixed term, not exceeding 5 years, as the President may determine at the time of appointment.

Nominations must be submitted on or before 9 October 1996 and must be accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae and motivation concerning the suitability of each candidate.
