Executive Deputy President Thabo Mbeki will arrive in New York City on 9 September 1996 to receive the 1996 Business Council for the United Nations (BCUN) Medal on behalf of President Nelson Mandela.
The BCUN is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the work of the United Nations among the business community of the United States. Through the BCUN's National Conference Programme and UN Corporate Luncheon Programme, business leaders are afforded the opportunity to meet face to face with UN leaders for informal discussions.
The BCUN Medal was created to recognise those who have done the most to support and promote the principles of the UN. Previous recipients of the BCUN medal include Javier Perez de Cuellar, Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Thomas Pickering, George Bush, David Rockerfeller and the UN Peackeeping Forces.
Deputy President Mbeki will also utilise the trip to the USA to meet with the investment and financial community on the East Coast. He will visit New York (9-12 September) and Boston (12-13 September). This visit follows Mr Mbeki's highly successful visit to Washington, Atlanta and Chicago in August this year.
The objective of this visit will be to promote investment and to re-inforce the government's desire to create a secured and stable social and regulative environment attractive to business pursuits. He will also participate in various media interviews.
Deputy President Mbeki will return to South Africa on Saturday 14 September 1996.
