OMAR STATEMENT REGARDING STRIKE ACTION

Issued by: Department of Justice on behalf of the Ministry

The Minister of Justice, Mr Dullah Omar took notice of the letter by the group who calls themselves "Ex-KwaZulu Justice Department Employees". This group raised certain grievances against the current Regional Representative of KwaZulu, Mr Ntshangase, and started with a strike action today because, according to them, no steps have been taken to investigate these grievances.

Since their letter, dated 13 August 1996, has been received by the Minister's Office, various steps have been taken to arrange meetings to discuss these matters, but because of certain circumstances these meetings could not take place. A meeting has, however, successfully been arranged last week for 3 September 1996 where all relevant parties would be present and would have the opportunity to state their viewpoint. The purpose of this meeting is specifically to identify these problems that are experienced and to find a solution thereto.

In view of the fact that this meeting is arranged, the action of this group cannot be condoned and they are requested to return to work.
