ALLEGATION OF GOVERNMENT CONTACTS WITH STANSFIELD

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

MEDIA RELEASE BY MR SYDNEY MUFAMADI, MINISTER OF SAFETY AND SECURITY, AUGUST 30, 1996 CAPE TOWN

re: ARREST OF GANG LEADER: ALLEGATION OF "GOVERNMENT CONTACTS"

In announcing the arrest of alleged drug dealer Colin Stansfield, the police in the Western Cape made mention of various factors which hampered their difficult 3 year investigation. One of the factors mentioned was alleged Government contacts which the arrested Colin Stansfield had.

I have directed the National Commissioner of the SAPS, Commissioner Fivaz, to supply me with all the information relating to those alleged Government contacts.

If the information confirms such contacts and if there is the slightest indication of improper conduct or corruption by individuals in Government the matter will be investigated to the bone. The cancer of corruption or the conniving with alleged gang leaders and drug lords needs to be cut open, exposed and dealt with, wherever it may lead to.
