As a result of the increased passenger and goods traffic between South Africa and Mozambique in recent years, it has become necessary for the upgrading of the Lebombo Border Post to relieve congestion, especially during festive seasons.
In order to plan, co-ordinate and monitor all the activities related to the upgrading of the Lebombo border Post, an interdepartmental forum has been established. This forum consists of the following role-players: Department of Home Affairs, Department of Public Works, Department of Customs and Excise, South African Police Service, Department of Transport, Spoornet and Department of Foreign Affairs.
The upgrading of the Lebombo Border Post is to be done in consultation with the Mozambican Authorities. The upgrading process will endeavour to include a one stop service concept. Negotiations between South Africa and Mozambique concerning the upgrading as well as a one stop service have taken place and it has been decided to form a technical committee on which all parties involved, of the two countries concerned, will be represented to co-ordinate the project.
