OPENING OF THE MARITSANE DAM

The Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Professor Kader Asmal, MP, is set to officialltsane Spruit near Bushbuckridge ie on 31 August 1996. This dam is the important being that it is project commenced in 1994. Follow of the river running our of wathe provision of a temporary pipe pumping station it is now possiate of 60 litres per second to the Sand River.

To ensure the emergency supply, the Departmentbought a portion of the yield of Maritsane Dam which was construc of the emergency draw off point urpose dam, its long-term primaryng developed as a coffee and mac known for establishing a tea industry in South Africa.

The Maritsane dam has a maximum wall height of 18 metres and a capacity of 2,05 million cubic metres. The rubble masonry arch of a constant radius of 60 metres is 2,4 thick and 110 metres long and this forms the spillway of the dam.

Labour drawn from the local communities hand-placed 5 700 cubic metres of rubble rock over a period of eight months. During this process 120 employment opportunities were created.
