NOMINATIONS REQUESTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS CONSERVA AWARD

Issued by: Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism

It is once again time to submit nominations for the prestigious Conserva Award of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. The award, presented for the fourth consecutive year, will be presented in three categories, namely those for individuals, organisations and companies.

The Conserva Award is presented annually to serve as motivation and to recognise the exceptional achievements of South Africans from all walks of life who contributed to effective conservation and sustainable utilisation of both the natural and human living environment. Last year's winner in the category for individuals was Dr Sue Hart who has dedicated her life to actively promoting environmental conservation, awareness and education, and the upliftment of underprivileged people. Trees for Africa, one of the first NGOs to play a positive and active role in empowering people through community owned projects, received the award in the category for organisations, while the Natal Parks Board was the overall winner in the category for companies.

All nominations will be judged by an independent panel of judges representing a wide spectrum of private organisations involved in conservation matters. THe extent to which the contribution benefited the environment as well as communities will be taken into consideration as well as the economic value of the entry with regard to the existing resource base.

The Conserva Award, an original bronze statuette by well-known sculptor Johan van Heerden, will be presented to the winners later this year at a prestige function. Certificates of merit will also be presented in all three categories.
