RESOLUTION OF DISPUTE AT RUSTENBURG PLATINUM MINES
The management of AMPLATS and a delegation of workers involved in industrial action accepted proposals recommended to them to settle the dispute at RPM. (A copy of the proposals is attached).
The proposals were recommended for acceptance by the parties involved in the dispute by the Minister of Labour, Mr Tito Mboweni after lengthy discussions which started on Thursday, 1 August and ended on Saturday, 3 August 1996.
The discussions came after intervention by Minister Mboweni and were aimed at finding a resolution to the industrial turmoil which has been prevailing at AMPLATS since the strike started on 25 June 1996.
This intervention came at a time when the situation had deteriorated drastically as workers were dismissed, evictions from mine hostels taking place and unrest increased. Several attempts were made by parties to end the crisis without much progress. The situation deteriorated as workers were dismissed and evicted from the mine.
THe proposals will be communicated to ex-striking employees by both management and delegates representing the ex-striking employees. Copies of the proposals have been made available to representatives of ex-striking employees in order to commence immediate report back. Management will also communicate these proposals at all mine operations.
Minister Mboweni has strongly urged all ex-striking employees to accept the proposals as a basis for restoring stability at the mine.
