MEMO TO ALL LABOUR CORRESPONDENTS AND NEWS EDITORS

Issued by: Department of Labour

Date: 31 July 1996

There appears to have been a misunderstanding as to the role played by mediator, Mr. Charles Nupen in the current clothing and textile industry strike.

Mr Nupen was asked by Labour Minister, Mr Tito Mboweni, to intervene in the industrial action in his own capacity as an independent mediator. This is contrary to the perception created in some media reports. Mr Nupen is NOT acting in his capacity as Director of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The CCMA is yet to be launched and as such, no individual is doing any mediation work on its behalf.
